The route at a glance
Sorrento - Capri is the shortest crossing to the island and one of two corridors that run all year. Six operators sail it: Alilauro Gruson provides the most departures, alongside Caremar, SNAV, NLG, Laser Capri and Seremar. In the summer half of the year the timetable is dense enough that a reservation matters more for the way back than for the way out; in winter a lean daily service remains.
Almost everything on this route is a fast craft. Starting from the Sorrento coast saves a good hour of ground travel compared with reaching Naples, and the crossing itself takes less than half an hour.
Where to board in Sorrento
Every boat leaves from Marina Piccola, the harbour below Sorrento's old town. A footpath and a lift lead down the cliff from the centre; with luggage, the bus or a taxi is the easier option. The operators' ticket desks stand side by side on the quay.
Two nearby names expressly do not belong to this route: Piano di Sorrento and Seiano are separate quays a few kilometres north, served by Laser Capri in season. They have their own timetable, their own ticket and far fewer departures. Mistaking them for Sorrento puts you at the wrong harbour.
Check-in and boarding
Tickets are sold online and at the operators' desks on the quay. Boarding opens shortly before departure but closes earlier than many travellers expect; the binding cut-off is in your booking confirmation. In high season the desks are busiest in the late morning, when day-trippers and arriving guests overlap.
On board
The fast craft are seated vessels with an enclosed cabin; walking on deck during the crossing is not provided for. On a crossing this short that is no great loss, though it is noticeable in a swell. Baggage, pet and seating rules are set by each operator individually and differ markedly: do not assume that one company's conditions apply at the next desk.
Cars and bicycles
No vehicles travel on this route; in the Gulf of Naples only the conventional ferry from Naples carries cars. And even there, carriage is not the same as permission: the Campania region prohibits non-residents from bringing and driving a car, motorcycle or moped on Capri, in 2026 from 30 March to 2 November and again over the turn of the year, with a few exemptions set out in the decree. Bicycles are subject to each operator's own carriage rules, so ask before you book.
Arriving on Capri
Boats berth at Marina Grande on the north coast, the island's only ferry harbour. From there the funicular climbs to Capri town and buses run to Anacapri. Check the last return sailing of your day as soon as you arrive, particularly outside high summer.
Tickets and fares
The fare depends on operator, vessel and date, and becomes binding at the booking step. Because six companies share the corridor, the departure time deserves at least as much attention as the price. The short way across
Sorrento - Capri is the island's second year-round corridor and the shortest of them all. Six operators sail it: Alilauro Gruson with the most departures, together with Caremar, SNAV, NLG, Laser Capri and Seremar. In the summer half of the year the combined timetable is dense enough that you barely need to plan; in winter a much thinner but reliable basic service remains.
All boats leave from Marina Piccola in Sorrento, below the old town. The neighbouring harbours of Piano di Sorrento and Seiano are separate departure points with their own timetables and are not part of this route.

Questions about the Sorrento - Capri crossing.
How long is the crossing from Sorrento to Capri?+
Roughly twenty to forty minutes depending on the vessel and operator. It is the shortest crossing to Capri; from Naples it takes about twice as long. The time for your own sailing is in the timetable.
Do the boats run in winter?+
Yes. Sorrento is, with Naples, the only corridor that runs all year, and Caremar sails through the winter. The other operators concentrate on the summer half of the year, when the combined frequency is a multiple of the winter timetable.
Which operators sail from Sorrento?+
Alilauro Gruson has the most departures, joined by Caremar, SNAV, NLG, Laser Capri and Seremar. A ticket is valid only with the operator you bought it from; switching to another company's boat is not a given.
Where exactly do the boats leave from?+
From Marina Piccola, the harbour below Sorrento's old town. Do not confuse it with Piano di Sorrento and Seiano: those are two separate quays a few kilometres to the north, served seasonally by Laser Capri, with their own timetable and their own ticket.
How much luggage can you bring?+
The fast craft on this route are built for short crossings, luggage space is limited and the rules differ from operator to operator, sometimes with a surcharge for large items. If you are travelling with a suitcase, check with your operator before booking.
Can you take a car or a bicycle?+
Not on this route. In the Gulf of Naples only the conventional ferry from Naples carries vehicles. Separately from that, the Campania region bars non-residents from bringing vehicles onto Capri, in 2026 from 30 March to 2 November and again over the turn of the year. Leave the car in Sorrento.
How should you plan the return trip?+
Plan it before you go out. The last sailing from Capri is considerably earlier in winter than in summer, and on busy summer evenings the popular times go first. The timetable shows both directions.
