Frequent questions about ferries to Capri

Which port sails when, what a ticket covers and what you may take on board

Ports, seasons and crossing times

How long does the crossing to Capri take?+

From Sorrento roughly twenty to forty minutes, the shortest way across. From Naples about fifty minutes by fast craft and one to one and a half hours by conventional ferry. The seasonal Amalfi Coast boats take longer because they call at several quays.

Which port suits an arrival by train?+

Naples and Salerno sit on the national rail network, Sorrento and Castellammare di Stabia on the Circumvesuviana line. Coming from Rome or from the south, Naples is the usual change; Salerno only helps between spring and autumn, when its Capri boats run.

Can I travel from Ischia or Procida to Capri?+

In the summer half of the year only. Alicost, Alilauro, Capitan Morgan and Laser Capri Linee Blu link the Ischia harbours with the island, and the Procida service ends at the end of September. Outside the season the way round is via Naples. The timetable shows what sails on your date.

Is a day trip from the Amalfi Coast realistic?+

In season yes, provided you plan the return first. The small quays at Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori and Minori often see a single run out and back, and on the seasonal lines the last departure from Capri can fall well before the evening.

Tickets and booking

Should I book ahead or buy at the pier?+

Operators sell at the ticket desks on the quay, and Laser Capri advises booking ahead, above all in high season. On the year-round corridors from Naples and Sorrento the next boat is rarely far off; on a seasonal line with one or two sailings a day, a booking is worth much more.

Is my ticket valid with another operator?+

No. NLG's conditions of carriage make a ticket personal, non-transferable and valid only for the transport named on it, and the other companies work the same way. Six operators share the Sorrento corridor and three the Naples one, but each ticket belongs to one of them.

Can I change or cancel a ticket?+

That depends on the operator. NLG accepts cancellation at the issuing ticket office up to 48 hours before departure, against a penalty of 30 %, and nothing after that. Other companies set their own limits, so what counts for you are the terms in your booking confirmation.

What decides the fare?+

The route, the vessel type, the operator, the season and whether luggage beyond the free allowance, a pet or a vehicle travels with you. Fast craft and conventional ferries differ on the same corridor. What makes up the fare is set out on the prices page; the binding amount appears at the booking step.

Luggage, pets and vehicles

How much luggage can I take?+

Less than most people expect on the fast craft. NLG carries one piece per passenger free of charge, up to 50x30x15 cm and 5 kg, and boards anything beyond that against payment of the applicable fee. Allowances differ by operator, so check yours before you travel with a suitcase.

Can I bring a dog or a cat?+

Yes, against the applicable fare. NLG requires dogs to be kept on a lead and muzzled and asks for a veterinary certificate with proof of rabies vaccination; cats and other small animals travel in a suitable carrier. Bring the papers, they can be asked for at boarding.

Can I take a bicycle?+

Only the conventional ferry from Naples has a vehicle deck. On fast craft a bicycle counts as oversized baggage: it is charged, and NLG boards such items only if there is room on board. Clear it with the operator before you book rather than at the quay.

Can I take a car onto Capri?+

Usually not. Regional decree DPGR 22/2026 bars vehicles of non-residents from entering or circulating on Capri from 30 March to 2 November 2026 and from 28 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, with defined exemptions. A bookable vehicle fare is not permission to enter. Checked August 2026.

When must I be at the pier with a vehicle?+

Half an hour before departure at the latest under NLG's conditions; miss it and the reserved place is no longer guaranteed. Foot passengers need less time, but the cut-off that applies to your ticket is the one in your booking confirmation.

Arriving on Capri

How do I get from Marina Grande up to Capri town?+

By funicular to Piazza Umberto I, the short way up the cliff, or by bus from the harbour. Both leave from Marina Grande, where every scheduled boat berths. With heavy luggage the funicular is the calmer choice; the island buses are small and fill quickly.

How do I reach Anacapri from the harbour?+

By bus. The island buses run between Marina Grande, Capri and Anacapri through the day, and there is no rail link and no through ferry to the upper town. Luggage is the real constraint on these small vehicles, so travel light or use a taxi.

Is there help for passengers with reduced mobility?+

Yes, if you announce it. Caremar runs a dedicated service for passengers with reduced mobility and asks for at least 48 hours' notice, and Laser Capri staff assist with boarding and disembarking. Say what you need when you book rather than on the day of travel.

Where does the boat back leave from?+

From Marina Grande as well, the only ferry harbour on the island, where the operators keep their desks on the quay. Check the last departure of the day in the timetable before you plan the afternoon, above all outside high season.
