The route at a glance
Castellammare di Stabia sits on the Circumvesuviana line between Naples and Sorrento and is the harbour for anyone staying in Pompeii, Stabiae or along the Vesuvius shore. Four operators run the route in season, and their boats could hardly be more different: SNAV uses a hydrofoil and crosses in around 40 minutes, NLG and Alilauro Gruson sail speedboats in about an hour, and Seremar runs motor vessels built as a day trip that take a good two hours. Together that's up to seven departures a day, most in the morning.
The route is seasonal: Seremar runs daily from April to October, SNAV, NLG and Alilauro Gruson until early November. In winter you take the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento or Naples and cross from there.
Departure in Castellammare
The boats leave from the town harbour. NLG has its desk at Piazzale Incrociatore San Giorgio on the harbour grounds, staffed only in the early morning to match its departures. Alilauro Gruson requires online tickets to be printed and shown at the desk; Seremar sells at the desk up to 30 minutes before departure and online. The Circumvesuviana station is in town, so allow time for the walk to the harbour.
Check-in and boarding
Alilauro Gruson's conditions of carriage require you to be at the quay 30 minutes before departure, Seremar 15 minutes at the boarding point plus online check-in before boarding. NLG and SNAV set no fixed deadline for foot passengers; SNAV notes that once you're in the boarding area you can only leave it again in an emergency. Keep your ID and ticket within easy reach in your hand luggage.
On board
The hydrofoil and speedboats are air-conditioned seated cabins with no time on deck during the crossing. Seremar's motor vessels are built for the excursion and are slower, but do have an outside area. Hand luggage is limited: NLG allows one piece up to 5 kilograms, Alilauro Gruson and Seremar one piece up to 9 kilograms; anything beyond that needs a luggage ticket, cheaper at the desk than on board with Alilauro Gruson.
Vehicles, bikes and pets
Only foot passengers travel on this route; NLG and Alilauro Gruson carry bikes for a fee. Pets are allowed with NLG and Seremar for a pet fare, dogs on a lead and muzzled, small pets in a carrier; Seremar takes one pet per passenger and wants it registered at booking. The Campania Region bans non-residents from bringing cars, motorbikes and mopeds to Capri, in 2026 from 30 March to 2 November and again over the New Year, with a few exceptions set out in the regulation.
Arrival on Capri
All boats dock at Marina Grande, the island's only ferry harbour; from there the funicular runs to Capri Town and the bus to Anacapri. Return sailings to Castellammare run in the afternoon and are fewer than the outbound ones; if you miss them, you can sail to Sorrento and take the Circumvesuviana back from there. The timetable shows both directions.
Tickets and fares
The price depends on the operator and the date and becomes binding at checkout; Capri also charges a landing fee. Children and groups pay less, and Seremar sells day trips with a same-boat return alongside the simple ticket. Cancellation is down to the operator: Seremar only refunds early cancellations and none at all in the last 48 hours, while Alilauro Gruson accepts cancellations up to 48 hours before. An overview is on the prices page; the more frequently served alternative is on the Sorrento - Capri route page.
