The route at a glance

Salerno - Capri is the longest of the connections to the island, but the most natural one for train travellers: Salerno is the Amalfi Coast's only harbour with a mainline station, and it's a few minutes from the piers. Four operators run the route in season, usually with one departure a day. Grassi Junior is fastest at a good hour, NLG takes around an hour and a half, Alicost just under two because its boats call at Amalfi Coast towns along the way, and Sant'Andrea's excursion boat a good three hours with stops from Vietri to Positano.

The season runs to late October with Sant'Andrea, to early November with NLG and Alicost, and to mid-November with Grassi Junior. In winter the way from Salerno is by train to Naples and on from there by Naples - Capri ferry.

Departure in Salerno

Salerno has two piers, and they aren't next to each other. NLG sails from Molo Manfredi in the commercial harbour, where the operator has its desk. Grassi Junior and Sant'Andrea dock at Molo Masuccio Salernitano at Piazza della Concordia, directly opposite the station; Grassi Junior sells at the last kiosk in the row of desks there, Sant'Andrea at its own desk. Alicost uses Molo Manfredi or Molo Masuccio depending on the departure. Check which pier your ticket names before heading to the harbour.

Check-in and boarding

Alicost's conditions of carriage require you to be at the quay 30 minutes before departure, Sant'Andrea 15 minutes at the desk; anyone travelling with Sant'Andrea on a return ticket reserves their seat for the return at least two hours beforehand. NLG and Grassi Junior set no fixed deadline for foot passengers. Grassi Junior sells online, at the desk and on board.

On board

NLG and Alicost sail air-conditioned seated cabins, Grassi Junior motor vessels with a cabin and an open deck, and Sant'Andrea an excursion boat with open upper decks. Over a three-hour crossing that's not a small detail: anyone wanting to see the coast should take the slower boat. Hand luggage is limited, to one piece up to 5 kilograms with NLG, one piece up to 9 kilograms with Alicost, and a bag with limited dimensions with Sant'Andrea; anything beyond that needs a luggage ticket.

Vehicles, bikes and pets

Only foot passengers travel on this route; NLG, Alicost and Grassi Junior carry bikes for a fee. Pets are allowed with NLG, Alicost and Sant'Andrea for a pet fare, dogs on a lead and muzzled, small pets in a carrier. The Campania Region bans non-residents from bringing cars, motorbikes and mopeds to Capri, in 2026 from 30 March to 2 November and again over the New Year, with a few exceptions set out in the regulation.

Arrival on Capri

All boats dock at Marina Grande, the island's only ferry harbour; the funicular runs to Capri Town, buses to Anacapri. On the way back, choice is narrower than on the way out: each operator usually has only one afternoon return, and Sant'Andrea doesn't sail until early evening. Check the last departure to Salerno in the timetable before planning your day.

Tickets and fares

The price depends on the operator and the date and becomes binding at checkout; on top come the landing fee Capri charges and, with Alicost, an embarkation fee in Salerno. Children, groups and residents pay less. Cancellation is down to the operator: Sant'Andrea accepts online cancellations up to 48 hours before, Grassi Junior only refunds if the sailing is cancelled. An overview is on the prices page.
