The route at a glance
Amalfi - Capri links the Amalfi Coast's capital directly with the island in season. Four operators share the route: NLG with the NLG Jet speedboat, Alicost with its speedboats, Positano Jet with no stops along the way, and Sant'Andrea with an excursion boat that picks up the coastal towns in the morning. Crossing times vary accordingly: 35 minutes to a good hour with NLG and Alicost, depending on whether Positano is called at, around an hour with Positano Jet, just under two hours with Sant'Andrea.
The schedule follows the day trip: up to ten departures a day at peak season, most sailing to Capri in the morning and back in the late afternoon. The season ends in late October for Positano Jet and Sant'Andrea, and in early November for NLG and Alicost; in winter the route runs via Sorrento or Naples instead.
Departure in Amalfi
The boats leave from Amalfi harbour, right below the old town and within walking distance from anywhere in town. The operators' desks line the harbour promenade: Alicost on Via Lungomare dei Cavalieri, Positano Jet also on the Lungomare, Sant'Andrea at Molo Domenico Cassone, NLG at the harbour. The old town is a traffic-restricted zone; anyone arriving by car leaves it at the Luna Rossa car park, which only takes vehicles up to two metres in height and no gas-powered cars. Amalfi has no sheltered harbour, just piers on the open coast: in a swell, departures are cancelled here more readily than in Naples.
Check-in and boarding
Alicost requires you to be at the quay 30 minutes before departure, Positano Jet 20 minutes at the pier, Sant'Andrea 15 minutes at the desk; NLG sets no deadline for foot passengers. Tickets bought online from Positano Jet go straight to boarding, while Alicost sells online up to 30 minutes before departure. If in doubt, go by what your booking confirmation says.
On board
NLG, Alicost and Positano Jet sail with air-conditioned seated cabins, Positano Jet with outside areas too. Sant'Andrea's excursion boat has open upper decks, and the coastal run past Praiano and Positano is part of the experience. Hand luggage is limited: one piece up to 5 kilograms with NLG, one piece up to 9 kilograms with Alicost, a small bag plus one standard piece up to 9 kilograms with Positano Jet, and a bag with limited dimensions with Sant'Andrea. Anything beyond that needs a luggage ticket, cheaper at the desk than on board.
Vehicles, bikes and pets
Only foot passengers travel on this route; NLG, Alicost and Positano Jet carry bikes for a fee, space permitting. Pets are allowed with all four operators for a pet fare, dogs on a lead and muzzled, small pets in a carrier, and a health or rabies certificate may be required. The Campania Region bans non-residents from bringing cars, motorbikes and mopeds to Capri, in 2026 from 30 March to 2 November and again over the New Year, with a few exceptions set out in the regulation.
Arrival on Capri
All boats dock at Marina Grande, the island's only ferry harbour; the funicular takes you up to Capri Town, and buses run to Anacapri. For the return, what counts is your operator's last departure, usually in the late afternoon. If you miss it, another boat to Amalfi or Positano often still runs in season; the timetable shows both directions.
Tickets and fares
The price depends on the operator and the date and becomes binding at checkout; Capri also charges a landing fee, and children and groups pay less. Cancellation rules differ by operator: Positano Jet refunds with a deduction up to 24 hours before, Sant'Andrea accepts online cancellations up to 48 hours before. An overview of fares is on the prices page, and the alternative from the neighbouring town is on the Positano - Capri route page.
